Etymology

From Middle Low German ôlt, from Old Saxon ald, from Proto-Germanic *aldaz. The A became an O through the effect of the velarised L in the same manner as in Холандски oud. Cognate with Енглески old, Холандски oud, Немачки alt, West Frisian âld. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eltós (grow, nourish), from *h₂el- (grow, nourish).
