Possibly from Антички Грчки χαμαί (khamaí) (close to the ground) as Isidorus said: "Cama est brevis [lectus] et circa terram; Graeci enim χαμαὶ breve dicunt" (Cama is a little [bed] close to the ground; the Greeks call χαμαὶ to small things). Other etymologies can include Celtic (Gaulish) or Iberian origin.
