From earlier nosthril, from Средњи Енглески nosethirl ~ nosethril (and other forms), from Стари Енглески nosþȳrel, equivalent to Африканс. Compare Old Frisian nosterle (“nostril”), modern West Frisian noaster (“nostrill”). Compare also Middle Low German noster (“nostril”), from Пра-Германски *nustriz (“nostril”).
