Borrowed from Јапански 漢字 (kanji, “Chinese characters”), from Middle Chinese 漢 (“Han dynasty, China”) + Middle Chinese 字 (MC d͡zɨH, “[written] character”) (compare Корејски 한자 (hanja), Мандарин 漢字/汉字 (hànzì), Вијетнамски Hán tự). Дублети of hanja.
